Plagiarism describes the act of copying or imitating another authors language, ideas or work as published in one form or another. It is most commonly referred to in academic writing, for example when a student passes off another academic’s work as their own. This is a very serious offence, it’s considered as cheating, and it carries punishments including failing the assignment, the subject, or even being suspended or expelled.
But more often than not plagiarising students do not mean to cheat. When referring to another’s work you are required to cite your sources in a citation style – including harvard referencing, apa referencing, MLA, or chicago. If you fail to do this the work appears to be your own, when really it is not. This even counts even when you are referencing your own work or essays. For this reason it is really important that whenever you state a fact or theory, that you reference where you found it.
